Back to Nature   Poultry

Free-range Eggs

Having always kept a few chickens to supply our family with fresh eggs, it seemed a natural progression to sell eggs alongside our farm-reared, Back to Nature lamb, pork and beef.

We tend to buy hens from a commercial laying flock who are replacing all their birds after one or two seasons. This means the hens are in their second year of producing eggs, so the eggs are fairly large with a rich yellow yolk, and we keep the hens in free-range conditions. This ensures that our hens naturally lay an egg most days and that they have plenty of room (about three acres) in which to scratch around, run and behave naturally. Read more about how we rear our poultry in the Farming section.

We sell our eggs in our Back to Nature Farm Shop.

Free-range Chicken

We source the chicken we sell in the Farm Shop locally. At present, we do not rear our own table birds but we may do in the future. We source free-range chicken from Surrey and Sussex farms who specialise in poultry to bring you white meat which is on a par in quality to the red meat we produce ourselves.
In the Farm Shop we offer whole free-range chickens, skinless chicken breasts, skin-on supremes and legs, plus chicken Kievs, stuffed chicken parcels, a seasonal variety of chicken sausages and breaded chicken burgers, kebabs and more.

Christmas Turkey

At Shabden Park Farm we rear free-range, grass-reared turkeys for Christmas, both traditional white and richer-tasting bronze-feathered birds.
We buy the turkey poults at about four weeks old from a Kent breeder and rear them free-range from July to December. We allow our turkeys to reach their full size naturally before we start to fatten them for Christmas - we do not give them growth promoters or any other additives. This produces a plump bird with a superior taste which has been allowed to develop naturally.

Our turkeys are sold oven-ready and range from 4.5kg (9lbs) right up to 12kg (26lbs).
2011 prices are £9.95/kg for whites and £10.95/kg for bronze.

You can order by weight in kilograms or pounds, or number of portions you need when you order, or both. When we prepare your order we make sure we choose a bird to suit. A deposit is required to secure your turkey, and the balance will be charged when the bird is collected.
We begin taking orders for turkeys around October and we recommend you place your order by early December to ensure you get your choice. After mid-December we still take orders, however the choice may be limited.

Turkey breast joints

Our boned and rolled turkey breast joints, wrapped in your choice of bacon, and stuffed if you prefer, are perfect for easy carving and can be cut to size. This is a popular choice for couples and families with small children, but a whole turkey breast can feed up to 15 adults, making it a good choice for party catering too.

Christmas Goose

Our farm-reared, traditional, free-range goose is a popular choice amongst our customers for their Christmas dinner. Goose is a rich, dark poultry meat with a crispy skin, with the bonus of lots of fat which you can collect during cooking into jars and which will make perfect roast potatoes for several months afterwards.
We buy day-old chicks from a Cambridgeshire breeder in June and rear them free-range until December. We allow our geese to reach their full size naturally before we start to fatten them for Christmas - we do not give them growth promoters or any other additives. This produces a superior taste which has been allowed to develop naturally, and is tender and full of flavour.

Our oven-ready geese weigh between 5 and 7kg (9-15lbs approx.)
2011 prices are £11.50/kg.
You can order by weight in kilograms or pounds, or number of portions you need when you order, or both. When we prepare your order we make sure we choose a bird to suit. A deposit is required to secure your goose, and the balance will be charged when the bird is collected.

Christmas Game Birds

We also sell free-range duck, pheasant, guinea fowl and other game birds at Christmas and throughout the winter months, and we can supply a three-bird roast by special order.
